Dear Members,
You are cordially invited to join and participate in an important roundtable discussion with the British High
Commission, focused on the introduction of the UK Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). The roundtable
will enable members to gain insights and knowledge into the UK’s CBAM as well the opportunity to offer input on the
mechanism.
Summary:
The use of a Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is emerging as a tool to address carbon leakage. The
CBAM approach aims to prevent carbon leakage by imposing carbon pricing on imported goods from their countries
of origin. The UK government announced on December 18, 2023, that it would introduce a UK CBAM by 2027, with
the objective to address carbon leakage risks. The implementation of the UK CBAM will affect South African businesses that currently export to the UK in key sectors such as aluminium, steel, iron, cement, heavy
manufacturing and energy-intensive industries.
Event content focus:
• To understand how the UK CBAM will affect South African businesses
• To understand and unpack the scope of the UK CBAM
• To be informed on the consultation of the UK CBAM
As members of Business Unity South Africa (BUSA) and, National Business Initiative (NBI), your insights and
participation will be invaluable in responding to the consultative survey on the UK’s proposed CBAM. Responses will
be shared between His Majesty’s Revenue & Customs (HMRC) and His Majesty’s Treasury (HMT), coordinated by
the British High Commission.
